SMART for Success
We use SMART as a core foundation in health care to help patients attain what they want for their health. SMART helps the patient to focus their attention and efforts on what they want and creates a structure for treatment. The SMART goal or objective is established before treatment begins. The following is the original acronym adapted for health care:
Specific- exactly, what do you want?
Measured- exactly, how much change do you want?
Assignable- exactly, what are you willing to do to get what you want?
Realistic- are you sure?
Timed- by when?
We help patients establish realistic goals or objectives according to their time and temperament. Regardless of the results, there is value- success or lessons.
Why make plan using SMART? As the adage says "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail."
Dr. Howard teaches "SMART Notes for Patient Management"- goal oriented documentation- as an NCCAOM approved continuing education course at www.acupuncturescholar.com.
"Feel good" Treatment
Brightwaters Acupuncture focuses on relief more than discomfort. This "optimistic" approach to acupuncture treatment brings attention to what the patient wants instead of lingering on what they reject. At Brightwaters Acupuncture, feeling good is a goal more important as feeling less uncomfortable.
Evidence Based Medicine Approach to Care
Evidence based medicine (EBM) uses current respected research and clinical experience to provide effective care. This allow us to focus on what is best for the patient and what is reliably predictable. My Patient, My Teacher and the Four Gates.
Measurements are an important part (EBM). Before (evaluation) and after (re-evaluation) treatment measurements are performed where possible. Very often, measurable changes occur by the end of treatment.

Acupuncture treatment unstructured care. An individual treatment is the basic unit of care. It may occur periodically or randomly for any reason. These are sometimes referred to as "one and done" treatments. Single treatments are a convenient option for those who are in the mood for an impromptu acupuncture treatment.
